Chapter Nine

The Shadow Spell requires the corpse flower, and the ghost orchid is vital in performing the Truthweave Spell. Maybe we are going about this the wrong way. What spell uses a shark’s tooth? By the way, no tag-backs! You are the one who will have to wrestle a great white. I’ll make sure to get it on video to show everyone back home, though.

I curled my fingers around the comforting heat of my steaming coffee cup. The stark contrast in humidity between the sundeck and the saloon had been immediately apparent. I couldn’t prevent the chills that traveled up and down my arms as the air conditioning blasted cool gusts throughout the sitting area.

Leo, on the other hand, appeared quite comfortable in the chair beside me. Aside from his twitching crooked whiskers, one would assume he was content. That was not the case. His hyperactive thoughts had recited numerous spells to unmask the killer in a matter of minutes, but each one required a very specific component.

Unfortunately, we had no access to any additives we might need in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. And I certainly wasn’t going to wrestle a great white.

Buzzkill.

There were less complicated spells that we could perform without anyone the wiser. My brain was already knitting together an itsy-bitsy incantation. One that wouldn’t risk my true identity as a witch yet would give me the solitude I needed with Lucy.

Hold up a lobster tail, Raven! I thought we agreed that my second soulmate couldn’t possibly be a sizzling slayer. And for the record, I’ve seen your attempts at knitting, and it wasn’t a pretty sight.

“Shadows make them go,” I murmured under my breath, tapping my fingers in rhythm on my mug to generate energy. I had waited to verbalize the mantra until Patty had used another tissue to blow her nose. I continued only when she cleared her throat, the sound covering up my voice. “Sunlight fabricates flow.”

Hey, I know that spell. That reminds me, I left you a present in the litter box.

I had made certain I was facing the table to ensure that Patty and Leo remained seated and comfortable in their chairs. It wouldn’t do to have either one of them influenced by magic. Lucy was next up on my list to question, but I couldn’t do so with Jay and Amy sitting so close to her. Liam’s reasoning behind all of us remaining together was valid, and I wouldn’t take the chance that the killer would attempt to steal the tender or one of the jet skis.

Amy rose from her seat, announcing her need to use the facilities. Since the door to the head was within our line of vision, I wasn’t concerned that someone could slip away and escape. Plus, Leo would alert me should anyone try to make a run for it.

I will? Raven, you can’t just blurt out important tasks like that without first running them by me. In case you haven’t looked at a clock lately, we’re smack dab in the middle of my designated naptime.
